Dr. Terri Lovell hired by the University of Ottawa [@LovellTerri]

Dr. Terri Lovell earned her BSc from Memorial University of Newfoundland and MSc in polymer science at the University of Oregon (UO). She worked at Thermo Fisher Scientific (legacy Molecular Probes) and became fascinated by fluorescent probes. She pursued a PhD with Prof. Jasti at UO; focusing on using nanohoops as new fluorescent scaffolds, finetuning their photophysical properties, and exploring their biological applications. She obtained an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship and chose a postdoctoral position at McGill University with Prof. Gonzalo Cosa, working on improving fluorophores for single-molecule fluorescence microscopy. Dr. Lovell accepted an Assistant Professor position at the University of Ottawa, which she will begin in July 2024.

University of Waterloo: Definite Term Lecturer position in Biochemistry

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a full-time Definite Term Lecturer position in Biochemistry. The successful candidate will normally teach five courses over three terms per year in introductory biochemistry and related advanced topics. In addition to teaching, they will have a substantial role in advising undergraduate students and in further developing the Biochemistry undergraduate program, which is a joint program of the departments of Chemistry and Biology. This appointment will be made for an initial three-year term. This position fills an important role in the program, however, and it is anticipated that an appointee with outstanding performance will be considered for a permanent appointment as a Continuing Lecturer during a second three-year term.


Applicants should have outstanding training and demonstrated excellence in biochemistry. A doctoral degree in biochemistry or a closely related discipline is required; postdoctoral experience is desired. Applicants should have established an outstanding biochemistry teaching record or be able to provide evidence of potential for high-quality teaching in biochemistry at all levels within the undergraduate curriculum. Experience in implementing evidence-based pedagogical practices in a university setting will be considered an asset.


The University of Waterloo is located in the vibrant and friendly two-university Region of Waterloo (population 550,000) in southwestern Ontario, approximately 100 km from Toronto. The anticipated salary range for the Definite Term Lecturer is $85,000 to $100,000 per year. The start date for this position is November 1, 2024.

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria invites applications for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (CRC) position in Inorganic Materials and Polymers. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in coordination chemistry synthesis and reactivity, and/or inorganic polymers. This CRC recruitment is part of a broad strategy to take advantage of our current research infrastructure in the area established recently through the Canada 150 Research Chair program. The successful candidate will be responsible for laboratory preparation and instruction from among the following: General Chemistry, Physical, Inorganic, Analytical, Organic and Biochemistry courses.

Some specific duties to the role are but not limited to:

  • Ensure that correct and safe laboratory procedures are followed by students in the Laboratory, pursuant to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, including the proper use of safety glasses, lab coats, and any other appropriate personal protective equipment, when required
  • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory and related equipment, supplies and specimens as required in order that varied experiments can be performed;
  • Prepare and lead the classes in problem solving session (in lieu of laboratories when necessary)
  • Participate in safety inspections of laboratories.
  • Assist the Department during academic advising and specifically with the scheduling of lab sections

The successful candidate will also conduct discipline-based research and undertake appropriate service activities within the university community. The capacity to develop an externally funded research program is also expected.

Candidate must hold a Ph.D. in chemistry with a strong emphasis/specialization in organic chemistry and will be expected to establish an independent and recognized research program. Candidates who are in the later stages of their PhD may be considered with the successful completion of the PhD being a condition of employment.

The successful applicant will be expected to establish vigorous externally funded research programs. Commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching and the involvement of undergraduates in research is a focus.

Job Summary

The Senior Lab Instructor (SLI) supports the preparation and development of experimental content, preparing the Teaching Assistant Instructors (TAs) to teach and grade the work of the undergraduate students, teaching those undergraduates, maintenance of the teaching and working environment of the associated space and facilities, and the maintenance of the chemical inventory. This position is the primary instructor for the lab component in 100-level topic courses, and for the on-line course 091. 

The SLI is responsible for safety training, supervision and training of Laboratory Assistants (LAs) and Teaching Assistants (TAs), maintenance of designated teaching space and equipment/ instrumentation, records management of student information, and communication with students, SLIs, LAs, TAs, professors, the ULS, the Administrative Officer (AO) and the Chair of the Department.

Job Requirements

This position requires an MSc in Chemistry with a minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a scientific environment. Teaching experience is also required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 

In addition, this position requires:

•    Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Department of Chemistry is inviting applications for a full-time position as Head at the rank of tenured Professor or Associate Professor. The Headship is set to commence on January 1, 2025, or on a mutually agreed-upon date for a five-year term with the possibility of renewal, subject to satisfactory review.  The Professor or Associate Professor appointment would be a continuing position. The Department currently has 20 full time tenured and tenure track faculty members and 8 Instructors, and offers Honours, Major and Cooperative undergraduate programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry, and MSc and PhD degrees in all of the major sub-disciplines of Chemistry including Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, Materials Science, Physical and Quantum Theoretical Chemistry.

Qualifications :

The Department has a well-established and equipped research facility, including a Cryo- Transmission Electron Microscope, X-ray diffractometers for proteins and small molecules, 4 Liquid and solid-state NMR Spectrometers, an Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometer and a Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Mass Spectrometer among others, and is supported by strong research links with other departments within the Faculty of Science, including Microbiology, Physics and Astronomy, Biological Sciences, as well as those within the Faculties of Agricultural and Food Science, Engineering, and Medicine.
