Responsibilities
The Laboratory Supervisor provides leadership in the undergraduate teaching labs within the Department of Chemistry and will advocate and plan strategically on behalf of, and in conjunction with, the Faculty and staff of the department. The Laboratory Supervisor supports the teaching and service missions of the department by effectively managing all operational aspects of the Undergraduate Laboratories, and provides supervision to the laboratory technical staff. The incumbent will contribute to achieving a key feature of the mission of the Department of Chemistry by providing a safe, well organized, and efficient laboratory learning experience to a large number of undergraduate students. The Laboratory Supervisor will ensure that safety training is provided to staff and students and strategically plan for short and long term upgrades to the laboratory operations. The incumbent will develop new, or improve existing, experimental curriculum offered by the department's undergraduate courses in collaboration with course instructors. The incumbent will establish experimental procedures and prepare lab manuals, which have been vetted with regard to safety, cost and time constraints. The Laboratory Supervisor advocates for the Department to acquire and modernize lab equipment and instruments, and is involved in funding applications from external sources for lab needs. The Laboratory Supervisor also facilitates the development of valuable skill sets in Undergraduate Students, which can be used in their employment or in continuing their academic career.
Qualifications
Education: - PhD Degree in Chemistry - Additional formal training in Leadership and Business or Human Resource Management preferred Experience: - Three years of experience in a laboratory setting in a supervisory role - Experience with a variety of basic laboratory techniques routinely used in the organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry - Experience and thorough understanding of the function and operation of a variety of analytical instruments such as atomic, mass, IR, UV spectrometers, liquid and gas chromatographs Skills & Expertise: - Excellent communication skills in print, person to person and in large groups (writing, listening, advocating, relationship building, giving feedback) - Excellent theoretical backgrounds in the organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry and lab skills - Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and adapt to growth and change - Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated record of collaborative teamwork to effectively provide leadership and coach team members - Proven analytical ability with a working knowledge of accounting principles - Advanced computer skills including spreadsheet design, word processing and database management - Demonstrated ability to work independently, strategically, and operationally - Progressive staff management skills with a demonstrated ability to effectively contribute to initiatives as a member of the management team - Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage activities both for self and others effectively - Judgment, analytical and problem solving skills with a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and opportunities
