Position Purpose

Supervises, coordinates and manages undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratories, operating budget, and new experiment design and implementation. Ensures that necessary equipment and material are available, functioning properly and ready for use at all times, to foster a positive student learning experience. Teaches the equivalent of a three-unit (credit) course per year.

Essential Qualifications

PhD in chemistry
Demonstrated knowledge of advanced instrumentation used in physical, analytical, inorganic and organic chemistry teaching labs
Three years’ experience in staff supervision and management
Demonstrated experience in designing, modifying or optimizing upper-year undergraduate laboratory experiments in physical, analytical or inorganic chemistry
Knowledge of safe working practices (e.g., WHMIS) and lab safety
Ability to work independently, meet deadlines and set priorities
Ability to work within a budget
Experience in teaching (lectures or laboratory courses)
Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, online ordering, Internet)
Excellent time management skills
Ability to understand texts of considerable difficulty requiring knowledge of concepts, procedures or systems
Ability to write technical documents describing internal procedures and instruction manuals
Bilingualism — English/French (spoken and written)

The Food Science program produces students with expertise in both the science of food, policy and regulation of the food industry. The primary research activities associated with this group include value added nutrients in a wide array of crops and methods to control food spoilage as well as novel methods to detect food-borne contaminants (viruses, mycotoxins) in food.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. and show outstanding potential for independent research through a strong record of accomplishment of high quality research. The candidate must also demonstrate strong communication skills and be willing to contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in Food Science. Candidates are expected have a demonstrated track record centered on chemical food toxicants and their analysis in the context of hazard characterization.

Thomas Baumgartner hired at York

Congratulations to Thomas Baumgartner, who was hired as a professor in the Department of Chemistry at York University. Dr. Baumgartner completed his PhD at the University of Bonn and completed postdoctoral studies at the University of Toronto. He was a habilitand at RWTH Aachen University before taking a faculty position at the University of Calgary in 2006. Professor Baumgartner group studies phosphaorganic and organometallic materials for the generation of solar energy and its storage.

University of Manitoba: Instructor

Chemistry - Senior Instructor / Instructor II / Instructor I

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full time two year Term position at the rank of Senior Instructor/Instructor II/Instructor I, commencing September 1, 2017 and ending August 31, 2019 subject to final budgetary approval. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate must have a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related field, and documented evidence of excellence in teaching at a university level. The position includes teaching responsibilities in introductory undergraduate chemistry in classroom and laboratory settings and duties may also include upper division supervision of the lab programs in areas including, but not limited to, analytical and physical chemistry. Experience in the use of instrumentation commonly used in these subject areas is desired. The candidate must provide evidence of their proficiency to teach in all of these areas. Final assigned duties will be subject to the needs of the Department. Faculty members at the rank of Instructor at the University of Manitoba also are expected to contribute to service. There is no formal research expectation in this position.

The Department of Chemistry consists of 25 faculty members including 6 instructors and 12 support staff covering the traditional and applied areas of chemistry and biochemistry. University of Victoria: Assistant Teaching Professor with expertise in the area of Organic Chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor with expertise in the area of Organic Chemistry.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching organic and bioorganic chemistry courses at the second and third year level and may be required to teach chemistry at other levels. The appointee will become an outstanding teacher and mentor of undergraduate students, and will contribute to the development and delivery of core programs in Chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry is a research-intensive unit at the University of Victoria and is dedicated to providing outstanding programs for undergraduate students in Chemistry. Graduates of the department are well prepared for graduate school, professional programs and positions in the private sector. Recent enhancement of research activities within the department, as well as increases in the number of graduate students and undergraduate students, characterise the department as one of the strongest in Canada. New research space and undergraduate laboratory space has dramatically enhanced research activity and the laboratory experience for undergraduate students. REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have:

  • PhD in Chemistry or a relevant discipline,

Ryerson University: Limited Term Teaching Positions

Three (3) Limited Term Faculty Positions in Biology and Chemistry
Department of Chemistry and Biology

The Department of Chemistry and Biology at Ryerson University invites applications for three (3) Limited Term Faculty (LTF) positions: one (1) in Biology and two (2) in Chemistry. These positions are subject to final budgetary approval. The appointments will be at the Assistant Professor level and will commence August 1, 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter. Individuals with a cumulative total of three (3) or more years of previous service at Ryerson University as an LTF are not eligible for consideration in this competition.

The successful candidate for the Biology LTF position is expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Biology and post-secondary teaching experience. The position will have teaching and course management obligations for a range of instruction of first year general biology, second year biochemistry, as well as laboratory and course coordination duties for general biology. The successful candidate for first General Chemistry LTF position is expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry and post-secondary teaching experience. The position will have teaching and service obligations for a range of instruction of first year general chemistry teaching and laboratory coordination. The duration of this appointment is 36 months.

The successful candidate for the second Organic Chemistry LTF position is expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry and post-secondary teaching experience. The position will have teaching and service obligations for a range of instruction of second year organic chemistry and laboratory coordination. The duration of this appointment is 24 months.
