University of Saskatchewan: Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Analytical Environmental Chemistry

The College of Arts and Science invites applications from qualified individuals for a tenure-track appointment and Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Analytical Environmental Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry (artsandscience.usask.ca/chemistry). The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program is the flagship of a national strategy to make Canada one of the world's top countries in research and development (www.chairschaires.gc.ca). The successful candidate will build an internationally-recognized program in analytical chemistry as  applied to environmental science, broadly defined. Appropriate areas of focus include, but are not limited to, the chemistry of aqueous interfaces in the environment, analysis of contaminants in complex environmental media, application of synchrotron techniques in environmental science, and the development of new analytical methods. The Chair will attract and maintain extramural funding, participate in graduate supervision, and contribute to design and delivery of the department's undergraduate and graduate analytical chemistry curriculum.

The Department of Chemistry is the home of 20 faculty, 17 staff, and more than 80 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows working in every area of chemistry. The University of Saskatchewan is home to the largest interdisciplinary toxicology research and training centre in Canada (www.usask.ca/toxicology), University of Saskatchewan School of Environment and Sustainability (www.usask.ca/sens), and the Global Institute for Water Security. The Chair will have the opportunity to seek affiliation with these units if appropriate. Qualifications

Tier 2 chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars, who have been active researchers in their fields for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination. Applicants who are more than 10 years from having earned a PhD in chemistry or equivalent qualification, for whom legitimate career interruptions exist, such as maternity, parental or extended sick leave, may have their eligibility for a Tier 2 chair assessed through the program’s Tier 2 justification process. The successful candidate will have an exceptional track record of research and a demonstrated potential for attracting competitively awarded research funding. Experience in interdisciplinary research partnerships and a commitment to education is ideal.

Salary bands for this position are as follows: Assistant Professor: $93,293 to $112,109; Associate Professor: $112,109 to $130,925; and Professor $130,925 to $152,877. UBC: Assistant Professor in Analytical Chemistry, Tenure Track

The Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia (www.chem.ubc.ca) is seeking an outstanding new investigator for a full time tenure-track faculty position, at the rank of Assistant Professor. We are seeking candidates of exceptional scientific talent who have demonstrated success in analytical chemistry working at the interface of one or more other areas of science including, but not limited to, biological chemistry, data science, environmental chemistry, materials chemistry, and radiochemistry.

The position requires a Ph.D. degree in Chemistry or a related discipline, postdoctoral experience, and an outstanding research track record. Relevant postdoctoral experience is highly desirable. The successful candidate will develop and maintain an internationally recognized research program. As a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry, the successful applicant will be expected to effectively supervise graduate students, collaborate with other faculty members, obtain external funding, teach undergraduate and graduate Chemistry courses, and actively participate in departmental activities. Leading candidates will complement and strengthen the Department and University’s expertise in research and education.

The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an appointment at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level but a higher rank may be considered for applicants with exceptional qualifications and experience.

The anticipated start date is July 1st, 2018.

UBC - Okanagan: Biochemistry and Green Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry in the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences , at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia, invites applications for two tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor, one in Biochemistry and one in Green Chemistry. Each appointment is expected to start on July 1, 2018, or soon thereafter.

A doctoral degree and post-doctoral or equivalent experience in the relevant field (biochemistry or synthetic chemistry, respectively) is required. While each appointment will be held in the Department of Chemistry, there will be opportunities for intra- and inter-Faculty research collaborations. The successful candidate will, thus, be an excellent interdisciplinary scholar who has demonstrated strong research productivity and will be expected to establish an independent, rigorous, innovative, high-impact, externally-funded research program that complements existing strengths within the Department and in other disciplines in the Faculty and across campus. 

For the Biochemistry position, qualified candidates with expertise in experimental areas related to structural biology, membrane biophysics, and protein and nucleic acid biochemistry are particularly encouraged to apply. For the Green Chemistry position, qualified candidates with research interests in catalysts relevant to green synthesis of molecules or polymers (including earth-abundant transition metals, biocatalysts, photoredox catalysts, and/or organocatalysis) are particularly encouraged to apply. 

The appointee will have demonstrated experience as, or capacity to be, an excellent teacher and mentor of undergraduate and graduate students, and will be expected to teach existing courses in the Department. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to curriculum development and course delivery specific to their area of expertise, and to undertake service responsibilities at the Departmental, Faculty, University, and professional levels, as appropriate.

University of Victoria: Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with expertise in the area of Organic Chemistry. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a research program of international stature and teaching organic chemistry courses at all levels. Huck Grover Hired by Memorial

Congratulations to Huck Grover, who has been hired by Memorial University of Newfoundland as a tenure-track assistant professor. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons) at Wifrid Laurier before completing his Ph.D. at Western University with Michael Kerr.  He then moved to the University of California - Berkeley where he worked for Tom Maimone. Dr. Grover is a native of Hamilton, Ontario and completed his B.Sc. (Hons) at Wilfrid Laurier University. He then completed a Ph.D. in chemistry at Western University under the supervision of Professor Michael Kerr. Since 2014, he has been a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California - Berkeley with Tom Maimone.  Huck is a natural product synthetic organic chemist who will develop new synthetic methods for the synthesis of natural products and pharmaceuticals. Congratulations Huck!
